Get It Right With Rugs
Decorative rugs and runners have found a renewed status in the arena of thoughtful design for both the home and commercial environment. In an era of open plan living they are an effective way to define spaces and create pathways with artistic and aesthetic appeal. With the increasing use of hard floors such as stone, concrete, tiles and wood, rugs can also be an effective way to soften a room’s acoustics, while also introducing texture, mood, colour and personality.
The following information will provide you with some useful guidelines and advice to help you find the perfect rug.
When Size Matters
Consider Your Space: Decide how you want to use the rug – to fill a room, define a seating area, or add colour to a bedroom or hallway. Measure the space, noting the maximum and minimum dimensions.
Bedrooms: For a unified look, place a large rug under the bed. Alternatively, opt for smaller rugs on either side or at the foot of the bed for a layered effect. Choose calming colors and subtle patterns to promote relaxation.
Dining Rooms: Ensure your rug is wide enough to accommodate dining chairs, even when guests are seated or moving. This helps define the dining area, especially in open-plan spaces.
Living Spaces: In small rooms, leave a gap between the rug and walls. For seating areas, use a large rug to make the room feel spacious, or place the front legs of furniture on the rug to anchor the space. A floating rug can work if it's proportionate to the furniture.
Runners: When measuring for a hall runner, consider door clearance and furniture placement. Choose a design that matches the hallway's style. Remember, there's a wide range of styles and colors to choose from, so have fun exploring! Helpful tips: For a 1m wide hall, we suggest a runner that is 75-80cm wide. Smaller rugs make the space cozy, while larger choices make it seem more expansive.
Keep in mind that these are just suggestions. There's no hard and fast rule – trust your instincts and choose a rug that fits your space and style. And remember, the most important factor is how the rug looks and feels in your home. Happy decorating!
Caring for your rug
Flattening and Shedding: Your rug may arrive folded or rolled, which will flatten out over time. Some rugs may shed initially, which is normal and should ease up after vacuuming.
Regular Vacuuming: Vacuum your rug regularly to remove dust and dirt particles.
Rotation: If your rug is in a sunny spot or experiences heavy foot traffic, rotate it regularly to ensure even wear.
Stain Treatment: Treat spills or stains promptly by blotting them with a dry cloth or towel to absorb excess moisture. Avoid rubbing, and if unsure, seek professional help.
Underlays: Consider using rug underlays to keep your rug in place and prevent slipping. They also protect your floor and enhance the rug's softness underfoot.
